Design

The Frodo coin captures the memorable moment in The Fellowship of the Ring when Frodo tries to stop Pippin from revealing his identity in the Prancing Pony. Frodo falls and catches the ring on his finger, wearing it for the first time and becoming invisible. Frodo then finds himself in a terrifying twilight world, where he sees the Eye of Sauron seeking out the One Ring. The Gandalf coin features the wizard in the moment at the beginning of the film when he arrives in Hobbiton and meets Frodo. The third coin captures the moment when Boromir holds the shattered sword Narsil under the watchful gaze of Aragorn, who will eventually reclaim the throne of Gondor from Boromir’s stewarding family.

The obverse of each coin features 'Middle-earth' alongside 'New Zealand', acknowledging New Zealand's role in the films as the fictional land. These coins have been minted in flip orientation, where the coin is flipped vertically to show the obverse right side up.
