Native birds were again chosen for the 1962 Health stamps issue.

Issue information

The kākāriki (parakeet) was chosen for the 2 1/2d + 1d value and the tīeke (saddleback) for the 3d +1d stamp.

The stamps were also available as a miniature sheet of six stamps. The proceeds of the 'Health' value of 1962 Health stamps were donated to the Children's Health Camps movement.

Single Stamp

Single 2 1/2d + 1d 'Kākāriki (Red-crowned Parakeet)' gummed stamp.

Red-crowned parakeets (Cyanoramphus novaezelandiae) are now scarce throughout both the North and South Islands. On off-shore islands and Stewart Island they are numerous. Yellow-crowned parakeets a close relative of the red-crowned parakeet have managed to survive on mainland New Zealand.

3 1/2d
Single Stamp

Single 3d + 1d 'Tīeke (Saddleback) gummed stamp.

When the first settlers arrived in New Zealand, Saddlebacks (Philesturnus carunculatus) were widely spread over all three main islands and many off-shore islands. With the introduction of predators they gradually died out. The South Island subspecies survives on just a handful of small islands off Stewart Island. By 1950 North Island birds were confined to Hen (Taranga) Island. Since then they have been successfully relocated on a number of other off-shore islands.
