Cancelled set of four gummed stamps

Individual stamps included in this set

$2.30 A Mountain Like No Other - Located on Ross Island in Antarctica, the planet’s southernmost active volcano comprises rugged slopes covered in ice and snow, creating a stark contrast to the dark volcanic rock. The sheer magnitude of the mountain, rising to an elevation of 3,794 meters, leaves a lasting impression.

$3.60 The Secrets Within - Few humans have peered into the rugged outer crater that guards the volcano’s inner secrets. Within this boundary lies an inner crater cradling an active lava lake that boils in defiance of the surrounding icy expanse.

$4.30 Life at the Extreme - Most recently, scientists have been investigating microorganisms that have adapted to the volcano’s unique geothermal environment. Studying these ‘extremophiles’ will broaden our understanding of the conditions that can support life on Earth and give insights into the possible existence of life on other planets.

$4.90 In Memory of Professor Craig Cary May 1954 - February 2024 - Like early Antarctic explorers, scientists working on the mountain are pushing frontiers. Perched in Mt Erebus’s western crater, Professor Craig Cary carefully installs a bacterial culturing and temperature array in a 2-metre-deep hole drilled in a high-temperature geothermal site.

Mount Erebus Extremophiles takes a closer look at scientific research happening in the extreme conditions of Antarctica.  Click here for more information.
