New Zealand Post honoured the 90th anniversary of the end of World War One with this joint issue with Australia and Belgium.
Issue information
The declaration of war on Germany on 4 August 1914 by King George V verified the outbreak of what was known at the time as the Great War, and is now referred to as World War One. New Zealand's emotional response to the outbreak of war was reflective of its close ties with Great Britain, with over 120,000 of the population of 1.1 million enlisting in the war effort.
At 11am on 11 November 1918, World War One came to an end.
2008 marked the 90th anniversary of the end of the World War One, commemorating the armistice signed between the Allies and Germany at Compiègne, France on 11 November 1918, which took effect at 11 o’clock in the morning. The ‘11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month’ is now associated with the remembrance of those who died in World War One and a two minute moment of silence is observed in many parts of the world as a sign of respect. Of the eight million who died, 18,500 New Zealand soldiers lost their lives and over 50,000 were wounded.
Ninety years later, New Zealand and Australia came together to remember this important day and those who died in the service of our countries.
This commemroative stamp issue included a New Zealand miniature sheet, a miniature sheet first day cover and a joint pack with Australia (which included the New Zealand miniature sheet and an Australian miniature sheet). A miniature sheet issued by Belgium was available seperately.
