A popular favourite since it was first produced in 1988, the Round Kiwi is one of New Zealand Post’s most enduring stamps.
Issue information
Now, after appearances in olive green (1988), red (1991), blue (1993) and purple (1997), the Round Kiwi is being re-issued in glorious gold, a fitting hue to celebrate the start of the new millennium.
The stamp features the kiwi, New Zealand’s national symbol and a bird found nowhere else in the world. This rare animal with a distinctive curved beak and plump body cannot fly and, being nocturnal, is rarely seen in daylight. Its population is carefully monitored and protected in some parts of New Zealand.
This issue’s change in denomination from $1.00 to $1.10 reflects the new international postage rate for sending postcards or aerogrammes from New Zealand to anywhere in the world, or medium sized letters via International Air to Australia and the South Pacific.
