For the commemorative stamp set of 1946 the theme of peace and victory was adopted following the conclusion of the Second World War.

Issue information

Bradbury Wilkinson printed the 1d and 2d stamps, Waterlow & Sons the 1/2d, 3d, 4d, 5d, 6d, 8d and 9d values with Harrison & Sons printing the 1 1/2d and 1s stamps. All stamps were recess printed except the 1 1/2d and 1s values which were printed by photogravure.

Badge of the Royal New Zealand Air Force.  New Zealand airmen in large numbers flew with the RAF during the Battle of Britain.

New Zealand Army badge with desert and farm scenes surmounted by date palms, coconut palms and tree fern.  New Zealand forces took a prominent part in the war in Africa, in Italy and in the Pacific.

Single 5d 'Tribute to the Navy and the Mercantile Navy' gummed stamp.

The badge of the Royal New Zealand Navy with rope at base tied in sailor's reef knot set between the HMNZS Achilles and MV Dominion Monarch' Achilles, manned by New Zealanders, was one of three British naval vessels in the Battle of the River Plate in 1939 which culminated in the destruction of the powerful German pocket-battleship Graf Spee. The Dominion Monarch (Shaw Savill Line) saw war service and both before and after the war was one of the largest passenger vessels plying regularly between the UK and New Zealand.
