Following the expressed intention of the Post Office to feature different birds each year on Health stamps, another pair was chosen for the 1960 issue.

Issue information

The Kererū (Wood Pigeon) was depicted on the 3d + 1d stamp and the Kōtare (Kingfisher) on the 2d + 1d stamp.

The stamps were also available as a miniature sheet of six stamps. The proceeds of the 'Health' value of 1960 Health stamps were donated to the Children's Health Camps movement.

Image Title Description Price
Single Stamp

Single 2d + 1d 'Kōtare (Sacred Kingfisher)' gummed stamp.

Compared to Australia's 10 species and Papua New Guinea's 24 species, New Zealand is poorly represented having just two species of Kingfisher. One is the widespread Sacred Kingfisher and the other the introduced Laughing Kookaburra found only near Whangaparaoa peninsula. A kingfisher's diet includes insects, crabs, and even small birds.

3d
Single Stamp

Single 3d + 1d 'Kererū (Wood Pigeon)' gummed stamp.

The only species of pigeon indigenous to New Zealand, this bird has no known relatives outside the country apart from one which is now extinct in Norfolk Island.
