The very first Health Camp in New Zealand was established in 1919 to assist the welfare of unhealthy children. Run on a voluntary basis, these camps also aimed to foster the family unit. In 1929, at the suggestion of a Danish immigrant, Health Stamps were introduced to help fund the magnificent work of the camps. Today, they provide help for children with emotional and behavioural problems, encouraging them to realise their potential and channel their energies into creative and productive pursuits.

Two of New Zealand's sporting legends were depicted on the 1992 Health stamp issue - cricketer Stewie Dempster stands out as one of our greatest ever batsmen and tennis champion Anthony Wilding had a short but memorable career before World War I and put New Zealand on the tennis map forever.

In addition to his triumphs in all major world tournaments, Anthony Wilding is also famous for his training methods, commitment and ability to stay cool under pressure. His fanatical approach to physical fitness and utter dedication to the game made him a true champion on the tennis court. His achievements include: Wimbledon singles champion in four consecutive years (1910-13); Wimbledon doubles titles in 1907, 1908, 1910 and 1914; and four times winner of the Davis Cup (with Norman Brookes) in 1907, 1908, 1909 and 1914 |

Stewie Dempster - 80c + 5c Despite the staggering performances of modern day players, no other New Zealand cricketer has ever matched the batting average of Charles Stewart Dempster. With a test match batting average of 65.7 he is one of our all time greatest batsmen. He showed an eagerness and enthusiasm for the game which began at a very young age - crawling through a hole in the fence to watch his heroes perform at the Basin Reserve. At the age of 17, he first played senior cricket for the Wellington province, scoring an average of 50.8 in the 1921-22 season. Playing Wellington club cricket he scored 30 centuries from 116 innings. He also went on to play county cricket in England, astounding crowds with his performances for Leicestershire. Dempster's success at the wicket has been attributed to a number of talents - a willingness to run singles and the ability to off-drive, hook and glance the ball. |
