The childhood yearning for a pet, followed by the special relationship which develops, is a joy to watch. In 1993, pets and their young owners were chosen to represent the cause of children's health and to help fund the work of Children's Health Camps.
Issue information
Whilst the very early Children's Health Camps were established to help children suffering from malnutrition and tuberculosis, today they fulfil a much wider role. The reasons for referral are varied, however these days the camps are concerned with meeting the physical, emotional and social needs of camp children. For their families, the camps provide a period of relief and in many cases parents and guardians also develop new child management skills.
The proceeds of the 'Health' value of health stamps were donated to the Children's Health Camps movement.

Single Stamp |
Single 45c + 5c 'Boy with dog' gummed stamp. One of the most logical theories of the domestication of the dog is that man recognised its superior powers of speed, sight and hearing. Armed with only sticks and stones for hunting, man would follow a pack of dogs and, once they had killed an animal, drive them away while he helped himself to meat. Meanwhile, the dogs would circle, returning only when the man had finished eating. As a result, a mutual respect, understanding and companionship developed. Slavishly adoring, the dog is perhaps the only animal which today really shares our lives: helping us in our work, joining us in our recreation and faithful to the end. |

Single Stamp |
Single 80c +5c 'Girl with cat' gummed stamp. While the cat was never officially considered a sacred animal, ancient Egyptian drawings show that it was treated with the utmost respect and in fact, worshipped as a god. Rather than being hunted for food by man, they were encouraged to hunt rodents in the grain stores and protect families from deadly snakes. Hence the domestication of the cat. Graceful and independent, the cat has been domesticated for over two thousand years yet it is still virtually untrainable. |
