Children's Health Camps have been part of the New Zealand social landscape since Dr Elizabeth Gunn established the first camp in 1919.

Issue information

Since the first health camp was established in 1919, they have passed through war, peace, depression and recession, adopting different approaches to tackle different health challenges. But they have always stayed true to one basic goal - to improve the welfare of New Zealand children. The custom of children appearing on Health stamps was continued in the triangular 1995 Health Stamp - Leisure Pursuits issue. The illustrations on the stamps, the first day covers and the miniature sheet all depicted children at play. Their activities ranged from skateboarding to the more timeless fun of skipping ropes and swings. In these images, the freedom, joy and innocence that should be part of every childhood is colourfully expressed.

The proceeds of the 'Health' value of health stamps were donated to the Children's Health Camps movement.
