Issue information

New Zealand Post’s circular Kiwi stamp was first issued in green in 1988. This stamp was printed using the intaglio printing method and was released as booklets of six stamps.

Since the first release, the Round $1. Kiwi stamp was re-issued in red in 1991, again using intaglio printing. The 1991 release was produced in sheets of 24 stamps. In 1993 a second re-release of the Round $1 Kiwi stamp was produced, this time in blue.

The Round $1 Kiwi had become one of the most popular New Zealand stamps both with New Zealand and overseas collectors. It was re-released in 1997 in purple. Printed by Southern Colour Print, for the first time the sheet stamps were produced using the lithography printing process.
