The 2002 Children's Health stamps focussed on the benefits of healthy living, and the importance of eating a variety of different food.

Issue information

The 2002 Children's Health - Healthy Living stamps were all about the benefits of healthy living, and the importance of eating a variety of food from the four main food groups - fruit and vegetables; breads and cereal foods; milk and dairy products; and lean meat, fish, eggs, nuts and pulses. After all, 'we are what we eat', and maintaining a balanced diet plays a significant role in our long-term health.

Each of the three stamps in this issue featured a stylishly rendered 'still life' of nature's edible gifts. They offered us a tantalising glimpse of the immense diversity - in shape, size, colour, texture and taste - to be found in fruit and vegetables from around the world.

A Basket of Goodness

All three stamps featured on the 2002 Children's Health - Healthy Living miniature sheet, which depicted an image of a basket of fruit, whose rich colours and shapes were enough to tempt the taste buds!

Fuel for Life

Two first day covers complemented the stamp issue. The first featured the set of three stamps and an image of children enjoying a healthy picnic lunch, while the second included the miniature sheet, set against a typical New Zealand orchard, its apple trees laden with fruit.

Food to Enjoy

The stamps were also available in sheets of 25, which provided an opportunity to donate even more to New Zealand children in need of a supportive, healthy living environment.

Inspiring Healthy Living for 73 Years

Health stamps had been issued in New Zealand every year since 1929. Each of the stamps in 2002 carried an additional 5c surcharge, which was donated to seven Children's Health Camps throughout New Zealand. These camps build resilient lives by providing individual, innovative, strength-based services that support the development of positive lifestyles for children and families with complex needs.

Special Set of First Day Covers

The Children's Health Camps board released an official set of seven first day covers to help raise funds for the regional Children's Health camps throughout New Zealand.

These first day covers were specially designed by the well known artist Allan Mitchell. Each first day cover has its own distinct postmark, including the date of issue and the name of each of the seven Children's Heath Camps.

This set of seven was only available by invitation and had a guaranteed limited production of 750.
