Design

This exquisitely designed five dollar coin celebrated the Giant Kokopu (also known as the Māori trout) – a seldom seen but significant native fish of New Zealand.

The brilliant uncirculated coin in this philatelic numismatic cover (PNC) was made of a copper-nickel mixed metal and was silver in colour. The reverse of the coin displayed a carefully crafted image of the Giant Kokopu; while the obverse contained Ian Rank-Broadley’s effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.

The unique first day cover itself portrayed an image of the Giant Kokopu swimming in a stream. All five stamps from the 2003 Scenic - Waterways issue were affixed to this cover and it was cancelled with the Waterways datestamp.

The Reserve Bank of New Zealand and New Zealand Post logos were displayed on the back of the cover along with additional information about this native fish.
