In a world where tumult and destruction dominate the headlines, we all hope for peace – especially for our children and their children’s children. That’s why 'Peaceful World' was chosen as the theme for the 2007 Children’s Health stamps: to remind us all that we have a part to play in creating peaceful and violence-free environments – at home and beyond.

Issue information

Our three Children’s Health stamps illustrated the 'Peaceful World' theme through some well known symbols of peace from nature – the peace lily, the dove and the Japanese crane. Held safely in children’s hands, they communicated the importance of trust, respect and a willingness to change: ‘hands on peace’.

The 10c charge added to each stamp helped fund New Zealand’s seven Children’s Health Camps/Te Puna Whaiora, which are managed by the New Zealand Foundation for Child and Family Health and Development.

Established in the 1920s, and supported with an annual New Zealand Post stamp issue since 1929, the Health Camps today focus on ‘building resilient lives’. They provide specific, targeted, solution-focused residential and non-residential programmes and mentoring for children aged 5 to 12 years – those who are at most risk of poor physical and mental health, of school and social failure and/or exclusion and of developing antisocial behaviour later in life.

Te Whaiora works closely with community-based health, education and welfare agencies and with schools, families and other professionals involved in caring for children and their families. Together, they aim to transform the children’s lives, helping them to build a better future.

Send the Message Around the World

The Children’s Health stamps were also available as a miniature sheet and miniature sheet first day cover. They featured beautiful illustrations by award-winning illustrator Donna McKenna and they evoked the potential in all of us to give our children an environment of love, support – and peace.
