Design
The ferocity and detailed characteristics of the taniwha have been beautifully illustrated by Dave Burke in this 5oz gold proof coin minted from 0.9999 gold. This subject of many Māori myths and legends is portrayed emerging from turbulent waters which were said to be its favoured habitat.
This unique $150 coin shines through with its detailed taniwha design, and features the denomination in both Māori and English. Each coin is accompanied by an individually numbered certificate of authenticity, and is packaged in an intricately carved wakahuia. Made from New Zealand native heart rimu, the wakahuia features a beautifully crafted taniwha design, with paua shell inlays for the eyes. The deep stain of this treasure box reflects traditional wakahuia of times gone by.
