$5.10 Sarjeant Gallery, Whanganui
In 1912 Whanganui resident Henry Sarjeant bequeathed property to the Wanganui Borough Council for the purpose of funding a new art gallery. The Sarjeant Gallery Te Whare o Rehua Whanganui opened in 1919 and is recognised as one of Aotearoa New Zealand’s most important pieces of architecture. Today the Sarjeant Collection holds over 8,500 works of local and international art.

The city of Whanganui is known for its heritage buildings, arts events and iconic paddle steamer. Overlooking the city is the Durie Hill Memorial Tower which commemorates the 513 young people from the Whanganui and surrounding area lost in WWI. The tower is built from local shell rock.
