Design

New Zealand’s Māori culture is a vital part of our national identity. The 10-cent coin features a Māori carved mask, known as a ‘koruru’, with rafter patterns. Traditionally, a koruru is carved into the gables of the meeting house and is seen as the ‘guardian of the house’.

The 20-cent coin portrays an 18th century carving of Māori leader, Pukaki. After his passing, he was depicted in a carving that featured as part of a gateway to strengthen Ohinemutu in preparation for attack. The carving today can be viewed in the entrance to the Rotorua District Council building.

The 50-cent coin features the HMS Endeavour, the ship Captain Cook arrived on when he became the first Briton to reach New Zealand in October 1769.

New Zealand’s wildlife is celebrated on the one- and two-dollar coins. The one-dollar coin features New Zealand’s national bird, the kiwi, and the two-dollar coin features the kōtuku (white heron). In Māori oratory, referring to someone as a kōtuku is the highest compliment, as kōtuku are considered beautiful and rare.

This coin set has been issued alongside the 2024 New Zealand Proof Currency Set, which features the five currency coins alongside 1/2oz versions of the silver proof Dark Sky | Light Sky coin set. Click here for more information.

2024 Limited Edition New Zealand Five-Coin Proof Set

In response to the previous two reviews, you don't have to almost destroy the packaging to view the obverse! The bottom of the cardboard (below the coins) s not sealed, just run your finger along the bottom edge & separate the two pieces of cardboard. You can then remove each coin (in its own sealed packaging) from the packet to view the obverse and put them back in place when finished. Easy.

Coins look great, but plugged as 'These are the first New Zealand currency coins to feature a portrait of King Charles III on the obverse' which you can't see without ripping it apart!

2024 Limited Edition NZ Five-Coin Proof Set

A very nice coin set, if a little pricey for what it is, but I'm pleased to have obtained one. However, the packaging is very disappointing - for the first NZ currency issue featuring King Charles III it seems bizarre that the obverse of the coins with his portrait cannot be viewed without almost destroying the surrounding packaging. NZ Post you can do better - maybe talk to a genuine coin collector or two when designing packaging, to ensure it meets their expectations, and allows them for instance to easily view both sides of the coins as almost all collectors would wish to do.
