Formed by an explosion around 4,000 years ago, Lake Rotokawau is nestled between Lake Rotorua and Lake Rotoiti in the Rotorua Lakes district. It shares its name with lakes in the Kaipara District, Chatham Islands, on Aupouri Peninsula and near Lake Waikare in Waikato.
