Kiwi: a bird, a taonga, a national icon, a namesake. So unique, so precious, so symbolic. Long beak, big feet, whiskers - but no wings. Sleeps in a hole. Up at night. Likes an occasional fight. Soft, fluffy-feathered. Shades of brown, a rugby-ball body. Beautiful Aotearoa fauna. He tino ataahua te kiwi.

Nights where I live: Titiwai moonlit sky. Salty sea breeze. Window ajar. I lay in bed in a light dreamstate. He pierces the night. "I am here! Where are you?". She echoes back. "I am here! Where are you?". Somewhere. Down in the valley. Around the ngahere. Kiwi roam. Kiwi feed. Kiwi play. Kiwi love. I live here. I am fortunate. I love my neighbours.

Arohanui te kiwi.

Design

This coin was designed by Māori artist Shane Hansen. Shane designed NZ Post’s Matariki 2024 stamp issue, and delivers a unique perspective through his work. Shane’s coin design depicts a North Island brown kiwi calling in the night with marama (the moon) above. In a nod to the bird’s ongoing recovery, Shane was inspired by the sounds of kiwi near his home, and his children’s participation in recovery programmes in Tūtūkākā.

This annual coin issue celebrates Aotearoa New Zealand’s unique kiwi bird. Click here for more information.

    2026 Kiwi coin issue

Posted by Derek on 19th Aug 2025

I was greatly anticipating the 2026 kiwi issue, but have to say I am very disappointed by the design. The annual ‘kiwi’ coin should really be focused on the kiwi itself, and in my personal opinion, the 2026 version the kiwi is somewhat overwhelmed amongst the extravagant surrounds, giving the effect NZ Post is somehow trying to merge the separate ‘Kiwi’ and Maori coin issues. My first and unfortunate impression in the non-coloured versions of this coin is the kiwi is being consumed by fire, and once seen, I can’t unsee this. Attractiveness of a coin issue is a factor for coin collectors. I believe some of the finest ‘Kiwi’ coin designs include the 2011, 2017, 2018 and 2020 coins, showing realistic kiwi in natural poses or settings, with elegant, uncluttered backgrounds, and I look forward to when such designs become the focus again.
