$3.60 Peace on Earth – The gentle giants of our native forests, kererū (native pigeons) are the only birds large enough to eat the fruits of miro, pūriri, and tawa trees, making them important seed dispersal agents for regenerating forests. In the spring-summer months, you’ll see them gorging on fruits and sometimes overindulging on fermented berries. They make a soft, peaceful cooing call but are more likely recognised for the sound of their swooping wing beats.
$4.20 'Tis the Season – ...to be jolly! Natural songbirds, tūi are one of the most abundant, and most vocal, native birds across the country. They have a ‘double voice-box', allowing them to sing complex melodies. They’re also skilled mimics, copying the notes of jingles, phone ring tones and alarms. Tūi are very important pollinators of many native trees. To encourage them in your garden, you can plant harakeke (flax), kōwhai, ngutukākā, pōhutukawa and pūriri trees.
$4.90 Joy to the World – Kiwi are our national icon and unofficial emblem of New Zealand. They are a taonga (treasure) to Māori. Found only in Aotearoa New Zealand, kiwi are the flagship species for protecting our unique wildlife and defending the conservation estate.
$5.80 Season's Greetings - Pīwakawaka, or fantails, are often found flitting through gardens or bush areas. Appearing to come and say hello to people nearby, they’re more likely waiting for us to disturb any insects so they can enjoy an easy feast. They are very vocal, shouting a cheery ‘cheep cheep cheep’ and offer a magnificent aerobatic display when flying.
