In 1990 Auckland, New Zealand hosted the 14th Commonwealth Games.

Issue information

The 14th Commonwealth Games stamp issue entailed eight bold commemorative stamps representing a wide variety of the 1990 Games events, along with the Games mascot, Goldie - the Kiwi, and the official Games logo, together with two souvenir miniature sheets.

Two 40c stamps, one with the 1990 Commonwealth Games logo and the other with the Games mascot 'Goldie' the Kiwi were depicted against a background of the Waitemata Harbour, Auckland.

Single 40c 'Games Logo' gummed stamp.

The official Games logo shows the four stars of the Southern Cross exploding from a circle containing the Commonwealth colours. The stars represent New Zealand, but the rest is pure Auckland with the two blue bands echoing the seas on either side of the city. In the centre, the red band represents the land mass - the isthmus, Auckland.

The idea for a symbol to unite all New Zealand sports men and women was dreamed up in 1984. 'Goldie' was unveiled at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics, then attended the 1986 Commonwealth Games in Edinburgh, and the 1988 Seoul Olympics, and was the official 1990 event mascot.

The new Aotea Centre was the venue for the Commonwealth Games weightlifting event. The auditorium seated 2300 spectators including overseas television announcers and media. The event was held over five consecutive days covering ten different body weight categories from 52kg to 110+kg.
