New Zealand Post issued two miniature sheets and a souvenir cover to commemorate Italia '98, a World Philatelic Exhibition held in Milan from 23 October to 1 November 1998.

The theme of Italia '98 was the role that philately plays in creating a permanent, historical record of world events and developments.
One miniature sheet featured the Milford Sound and Lake Wakatipu stamps from the popular 1898 Pictorials Centenary stamp issue. The other miniature sheet honours the work of Peter McIntyre (1910-1995) who, as New Zealand soldiers fighting in a number of theatres of war, including Italy. This miniature sheet featured on the souvenir cover with two of McIntyre's paintings, The Anglican Church, Kākahi, 1972 and Wounded at Cassino, 1944.
