In February 1925 the Government Printer reported that the 1d 'Dominion' printing plate needed to be replaced. In view of the fact the 'Universal' type design had been in use for twenty-five years it was decided it should be replaced with a design depicting King George V.
Issue information
H L Richardson was asked to prepare a design similar to the 2s and 3s stamps that depicted King George V as an Admiral of the Fleet. It was recommended, however, that as General Sir Charles Fergusson - a distinguished soldier, had succeeded Viscount Jellicoe as Governor-General, it would be appropriate to depict the King in the uniform of a Field Marshall. The design was engraved by Waterlow and Sons, London. The stamp was in production from 1926 till 1935. The stamps were overprinted 'Official' for use on letters, packets and telegrams sent on the public service.
