On 3 June 1869 an Ordinance of the Provincial Council was passed establishing the University of Otago and giving it the power to grant degrees in Arts, Medicine, Law and Music.
Issue information
This was a milestone in the history of education in New Zealand as it was the first university to be established in the young country.
