New Zealand Post issued this special miniature sheet to commemorate the Shanghai ’97 International Stamp and Coin Expo in November 1997.

Issue information

In October 1997, China and New Zealand jointly issued a set of stamps that featured the rose.

As a result of the success of this joint issue, New Zealand Post attended the Shanghai ’97 International Stamp and Coin Expo in China on 19-23 November 1997. A specially overprinted miniature sheet that featured the Roses stamps was produced for this exhibition and also featured the border and exhibition logo in gold foil.

China’s association with roses stretches back many centuries, to around 2737BC, when the Chinese first used roses in their gardens. The Aotearoa-New Zealand rose, by contrast, was a new breed developed in the 1990s to celebrate New Zealand’s sesqui-centenary in 1990.
