Who is Stand Tū Māia?

Stand Tū Māia, formerly known as Children’s Health Camps is an organisation dedicated to providing specialist home and in-school care for children between the ages of 5 and 12. For more information, take a look at their website http://standforchildren.org.nz/.

Why did they change their name?

For many years, the Children’s Health Camps continued to operate and work wonders with their allocated funding. However, as time went on, it was becoming obvious that the need was becoming too great for the decreasing funding that was still trickling in. With many children coming in for illness bringing greater issues of neglect, abuse and wider family difficulties, it was obvious that the health camp's workload and scope was going to have to increase. In order to expand its capacity to encompass these wider issues, Children’s Health Camps and its corresponding assets were handed over to a charitable trust in 2001. The organisation was rebranded and named Stand Tū Māia in 2013 to bring visibility to the significant transformation of their work.

How long was New Zealand Post providing support in the form of stamps?

New Zealand Post produced stamps for Health Camps for 87 years. From 1929 New Zealand Post added a surcharge to its Health Camp stamps which went directly back to Stand Tū Māia.

Why are you stopping the production of the stamps?

With mail volumes suffering an increasing decline, the number of Health Stamps sold has also declined. In recent years, the surcharge collected through stamp sales has dropped below the breakeven point to administer for both organisations. New Zealand Post and Stand agreed that it was no longer viable to operate such a model and will discontinue the production of Children’s Health Camp stamps.

How will Stand manage without funding from Post?

Stand receives substantial funding from Government to deliver nationwide intensive services for vulnerable children and their families. The Stand Tū Māia Board also provides funds from its investment portfolio to meet the shortfall in government funding. Stand has a long list of community based and national supporters. From Fonterra, Variety and KidsCan, to local support in each district from Rotary, Mason’s, Probus, business owners, churches and trusts.

How else will Post be supporting Stand Tū Māia?

New Zealand Post will continue to have a relationship through its other community based activities such as Community Post.

Will I be able to purchase Health Stamps?

No, September 2016 was the last date of issue for Children’s Health Camp stamps, however this issue is still on sale until the 6 September 2017.

Can I contribute/donate to the amazing work that Stand Tū Māia is doing?
