A raised coral atoll affectionately known as the 'Rock', the island of Niue is a unique treasure of the Pacific. Visitors and locals alike delight in its crystal-clear waters, tropical weather and incredible natural structures. Mint, used or cancelled se-tenant set of four gummed stamps. The individual stamps in this issue were: Single 30c 'Marine Reserve' gummed stamp. The marine reserve north of Alofi serves to protect biodiversity off the coast of this popular fishing area. This reserve was established in 1999-2000 as the first formal marine reserve in Niue. The area was negotiated with the villages of Makefu and Alofi North, as it runs across the village boundaries. But Niue is taking even greater steps towards reserving marine life, with a proposed large-scale marine reserve announced in 2017, set to encompass 40% of its Exclusive Economic Zone. Single $1.40 'Coral Reef' gummed stamp. Niue is a raised coral atoll surrounded by pristine hard coral reefs that are home to several endemic species. As Niue has no lakes or streams there is no sediment in the water, it offers underwater visibility of up to 100 metres, making a Niuean diving or snorkeling experience among the best in the world. Single $2.00 'International Airport' gummed stamp. Niue may be small, but it has a consistent connection to the rest of the world thanks to its regular international flights. Currently, Niue's airport accommodates four flights a week. Single $4.00 'Huvalu Conservation Area' gummed stamp. A significant part of southeastern Niue nestled between Hakupu, Liku, and Alofi has been set aside as the Huvalu Conservation Area. Supported by the South Pacific Regional Environment Programme, 85% of the its 5,400 hectares is natural rainforest containing numerous species of banyan, Tahitian chestnut, and kafika trees. The reserve is home to coconut crabs (uga), fruit bats (peka), and the majority of the island's 29 local bird species. |
