The New Zealand Collection 2012 invited you to ‘take a closer look’ at the stamps issued by New Zealand Post in 2012 – a year in which we celebrated significant anniversaries, cultural diversity, our history and our landscape.

Issue information

Stamps are a way of telling stories about our nation, and this premium publication took a closer look at the narratives behind our 2012 stamp issues. Throughout the 81 pages, you could see stunning imagery and read fascinating articles that gave a unique take on everything from summer tiki tours to historic ships and even Hobbits!

Included within The New Zealand Collection 2012 was an exclusive A Tiki Tour of New Zealand No.2 imperforate stamp sheet. This quirky stamp issue took you on a classic Kiwi road trip around Aotearoa, and was a great addition to any ‘Kiwiana’ stamp collection.

Take a Closer Look

The New Zealand Collection 2012 was divided into three compelling sections: Aotearoa, Culture and History. In the Aotearoa section you were swept away with stamp issues that celebrated the scenic beauty of New Zealand, including the 2012 New Zealand Native Trees stamp issue. This fascinating chapter focused on Otari-Wilton’s Bush in Wellington, and celebrated New Zealand as a hotspot of plant diversity.

In the Culture section you discovered our oldest art form – Māori rock art. This unique art form is visible throughout the country, and the chapter within the album focused on sites in Te Waipounamu (the South Island). Read on further to the chapter that celebrated 50 years of friendship between New Zealand and Samoa, and you could gain extra insights into Michel Tuffery’s intricately designed stamps.

The section entitled History reflected on two major anniversaries that occurred in 2012 – Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II’s Diamond Jubilee and 75 years of the Royal New Zealand Air Force (RNZAF). The Governor-General, Lt Gen The Rt Hon Sir Jerry Mateparae gave his unique take on the special connection between New Zealand and the Queen in the Diamond Jubilee chapter, and the chapter that celebrated 75 years of the RNZAF was written by David Watmuff – Collections Manager at the Air Force Museum of New Zealand in Christchurch.
