The New Zealand Collection 2013 told the astonishing stories behind our stamps – with an amazing cast of characters that ranged from a wizard to the humble honey bee, and from our most beloved author to the Queen of England.
They say a picture is worth a thousand words – and the stamps issued by New Zealand Post in 2013 told powerful stories that celebrated the diversity, creativity, history and natural wonders of New Zealand.
The book itself was a thing of beauty – with spectacular images that highlighted the artistry of stamp design, and that illustrated the themes and events that inspired the stamps of 2013. And this year, for the first time it extended beyond its 81 beautifully designed pages, with interactive features that linked the pages to a wider world of discovery on the internet.
At a recommended retail price of $97.50, the book itself represented wonderful value for money – containing as it does real stamps valued at $119.30. As well as these, the album included an exclusive imperforate sheet of Classic Travel Posters stamps which was not available anywhere else.
Take a Closer Look
The book told the stories behind what will be remembered as a standout year for New Zealand stamps – divided into three sections.
In ‘Celebrations’ you read about the hype and excitement of the world premiere of The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey in Wellington. The event attracted some of the world's biggest stars to the temporary shire of Wellington, and gained media attention worldwide. Alongside this exciting article were the stamps celebrating the second film in the trilogy: The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug.
In the ‘Aotearoa’ section you found images and words that told the story of some very Kiwi stamps – like the set celebrating the works of legendary children’s author Margaret Mahy. You could also follow the humble honey bee on the incredible journey that leads to the production of honey.
In the ‘History’ section you read fascinating stories on topics such as how the Anzac tradition is kept alive by New Zealand servicemen and women, putting their lives on the line to see justice done in far-flung corners of the globe.
And you joined us in celebrating the 60th anniversary of the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II – and the arrival of a new generation of royals, with the birth of Prince George.
