Celebrate weaving, one of Tokelau’s traditional art forms, with this stamp issue.

Issue information

Weaving is a traditional art form that remains popular in Tokelau today. The most common materials used in these crafts are lau kie (pandanus leaf) and lau hulu (brown pandanus). The crafts depicted on these four gummed stamps included a taulima (bracelet), pupu (water holder), tapili (fan) and ato (basket).

Made from processed pandanus leaf, the bracelets depicted are one of several items the faipule (elected leader) of Nukunono, Pio Tuia assembled from the makers or owners in 1999.

These water holders are made from a coconut shell and covered in a wrapping made from plaited coconut husk fibres, or ‘sennit’.
