1902 Postage Dues

The first plates for the Postage Due stamps of 1899 were cast from type-set blocks but in July 1900 it was decided that any future issues of the stamps will be printed from engraved dies. 

Mr WR Bock of Wellington submitted two designs and one was selected. This was forwarded to the Government Printer with a request that the necessary dies be produced at once as it was desirable that the production of the new stamps be undertaken without delay. The intention was to replace the original issue as stocks on hand became exhausted.

The preparation of the dies was entrusted to Messrs. Turnbull, Hickson and Palmer, of Wellington. who made one die for the frame and separate dies for the values.

The 1/2d stamp was first issued in February 1902, the 1d in December 1905, the 2d in April 1906 and the 3d value in May 1928.
