Queen Elizabeth II and the Duke of Edinburgh spent 23 December 1953 to 31 January 1954 in New Zealand. This was the first time a reigning sovereign had visited and the authorities were in no doubt that this event should receive philatelic recognition. Because it was proposed to issue a Coronation set as well as the new definitive set with Her Majesty's portrait, approval was given for only two stamps to commemorate the Royal Visit.
