In 2005, New Zealand Post celebrated the invaluable and selfless work of three community-based organisations who celebrate key moments in their history.

Issue information

Through this issue, New Zealand Post paid tribute to the many thousands of New Zealanders who, as members and supporters of these three community groups, cared for those around them.

YMCA

The YMCA cebrated 150 years in 2005.

The first YMCA in New Zealand was founded in Auckland. Since then, the organisation has expanded to now include 17 locally affiliated associations that work from nearly 50 different centres. The four core values they share are respect, honesty, caring and responsibility. YMCAs embrace people of all ages and cultures, but focus particularly on the needs of youth, with youth and leadership development programmes, education services, recreation and fitness programmes and opportunities to embark on adventures.

Rotary International

Rotary International was 100 years old in 2005.

Established in Chicago by lawyer Paul Harris with just four members, Rotary has since grown to encompass 166 countries and a membership of more than 1.2 million. Started in New Zealand in 1921, Rotary has worked tirelessly to initiate and encourage a broad range of community initiatives - from hospital and school projects to health, environmental and defensive driving programmes. There are some 10,000 Rotarians in New Zealand.

New Zealand Lions

In 2005, New Zealand Lions celebrated 50 years of service to those in need in the New Zealand community.

There are now more than 13,000 people in the organisation, spread over 500 clubs nationwide. New Zealand Lions work with people of all ages, assisting the disabled and caring for those who are at a disadvantage. Their programmes range from citizenship services and drug education to helping out in times of disaster and a strong youth programme.

Mixed Miniature Sheet

The mixed miniature sheet featured all six stamps and gutter strip from the 2005 Commemoratives issue. As well as the mixed miniature sheet, there was also one for each organisation that featured only their stamps.

Commemorative First Day Cover

A commemorative first day cover featured all six stamps. It was issued to mark each organisation's milestone. A mixed miniature sheet first day cover was also available, as well as a cover that featured each organisation's miniature sheet.
