Issue information

Eat colours, be healthy! That’s was the message of ‘5+ A Day the colour way’ – a global campaign that’s encouraged people young and old to eat five or more servings of colourful fruit and vegetables every day. New Zealand Post was proud to support this campaign – and its role in helping our children to lead healthy, fit and active lives – with the 2006 Children’s Health stamp issue.

In schools and communities throughout New Zealand, our children are learning one of the great secrets to long-lasting good health: ‘5+ A Day the colour way’. What’s more, the lesson is easy to apply: with just three servings of vegetables and two servings of fruit a day in the colours of the 5+ A Day logo, our youngsters get the vitamins, minerals and phytochemicals they need to stay healthy and fit. It’s fun, it’s delicious and it’s nutritious too!

Since it was launched in New Zealand in 1994, the 5+ A Day campaign has achieved significant success. More and more New Zealanders are aware of and following its advice, and school-and community-based education programmes are proving popular among children and adults alike. With healthy eating habits now part of our lifestyle, future generations will have reason to thank us!

The Children’s Health stamp issue included a set of five stamps, a miniature sheet and two first day covers, one with the five gummed stamps and one self-adhesive stamp, the other featured the miniature sheet. A sheet of 100 x 45c + 5c self-adhesive stamps was also available. Each was a fantastic opportunity to spread the ‘5+ A Day the colour way’ message to friends, family and colleagues, in New Zealand and around the world.

Helping New Zealand’s children

Children’s Health stamps played a vital role in helping New Zealand’s younger generation. Each stamp sold carried a surcharge and every year New Zealand Post had collected this and passed it on to the Children’s Health Camps. The 2006 Health Stamp issue wth the 45-cent stamp carried a 5-cent surcharge and the 90-cent stamp carried a 10-cent surcharge, reflecting the removal of the 5-cent in New Zealand currency. Located throughout the country, Health Camps continue to help children and families with complex needs to build resilient lives by providing individual, innovative, strength-based services that support the development of positive lifestyles.
