Formed from two cones that erupted around 28,000 years ago, Tamaki Makaurau Auckland’s highest volcano is a popular spot for taking spectacular views of the city. Once a Māori pā, a citadel built for people to live in, evidence of former terraces and crop pits can still be seen. It is currently on a tentative list for UNESCO World Heritage status.
