Cancelled set of four gummed stamps.

$4.20 Maungawhau Mount Eden - Formed from two cones that erupted around 28,000 years ago, Tamaki Makaurau Auckland’s highest volcano is a popular spot for taking spectacular views of the city. Once a Māori pā, a citadel built for people to live in, evidence of former terraces and crop pits can still be seen. It is currently on a tentative list for UNESCO World Heritage status.

$4.70 Lake Rotokawau - Formed by an explosion around 4,000 years ago, Lake Rotokawau is nestled between Lake Rotorua and Lake Rotoiti in the Rotorua Lakes district. It shares its name with lakes in the Kaipara District, Chatham Islands, on Aupouri Peninsula and near Lake Waikare in Waikato.

$5.50 Te Pātaka o Rākaihautū Banks Peninsula - Consisting of two overlapping volcanic cones, Banks Peninsula was thrust out of the sea by a series of volcanic eruptions over 10 million years ago. Only 20,000 years ago, the Canterbury plains met the volcanic island and linked it to the South Island.

$7.60 Motukorea Browns Island - Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland’s most intact volcano is the namesake of motukoreaite, a rare mineral discovered there in 1941 that has only been found in a handful of other locations. Only accessible by private boat, it’s one of around 50 volcanic cones scattered around the city.

The 2025 Scenic Definitives stamps showcase some of Aotearoa New Zealand’s extinct and dormant volcanoes. Click here to find out more about the stamp issue.
