The UCCN was created in 2004 to promote cooperation among cities that have identified creativity as a strategic factor for sustainable urban development. The programme reflects UNESCO’s ambition to support innovation and creativity as key drivers for more sustainable and inclusive urban development.
As part of their membership in the network, Whanganui will be afforded greater connections with indigenous creatives around the world who focus on how indigenous voices can be reflected in place-making and the visual identity of cities. As well as the visionary architecture of the city’s landmark buildings, Whanganui’s historical contribution to creativity includes more than 800 years of Māori artistry and innovation.
