$3.60 Lake Manapouri - Known today as Lake Manapouri, the Fiordland lake was renowned amongst visitors as New Zealand’s most beautiful. It’s also our deepest, and its Māori name is Moturau. The lake scene captured in the postcard is relegated to history, since Lake Manapouri’s water levels were raised to create a hydro-electric dam in the 1960s.

$4.20 Stewart Island -  Belltopper Falls, or Horowai, is a popular tourist site on the southeastern coast of Rakiura/Stewart Island, particularly for sea kayakers enjoying the Port Pegasus bays. Pegasus Creek above the waterfall was once the site of New Zealand’s only tin mine during the mid to late 1800s, which brought a great increase in attention to the area.

$4.90 Lake Taupo - Aotearoa New Zealand’s largest lake sits in the centre of the North Island in a high volcanic zone where the earth’s crust is thinner. The lake was formed from a prehistoric supervolcano eruption which caused the crust to drop down by kilometres into a bowl shape, or caldera, and subsequently fill with water. Now a holiday destination, Lake Taupō has been drawing crowds with its natural beauty, geothermal pools, and the energetic Huka waterfalls since the 19th century.

$6.20 Lake Rotorua - Known as the jewel in the crown of New Zealand tourism in the 19th and 20th centuries, Rotorua was favoured as a tourist location for its geothermal qualities. It was also a location where international visitors came to engage with Māori art and culture.

This stamp issue celebrates the 125th anniversary of Aotearoa New Zealand’s first tourism department. Click here for more information.
