$3.60 The Dog - Central to the goings-on at Footrot Flats and the narrator in many of the cartoons, Dog the border collie gathers sheep into groups and eyeballs them to stop them escaping. In interviews, Murray Ball was often asked to disclose the ‘real’ name of the Dog. To this day, it remains a trade secret.

$4.90 Wal’ - Wal’s full name is Wallace Cadwallader Footrot. Wal’, as he is better known, is the proud owner of the farm. There are similarities between Wal’ and Murray. Both harboured dreams of rugby glory, and both loved the land. They also shared a mutual love of their respective border collies.

$6.20 Rangi - Rangi (full name: Rangi Wiremu Waka Jones) will be an All Black one day. Just you wait and see. Rangi often hangs out at Footrot Flats when Pongo is staying. Rangi’s father is an abattoir slaughterman, and his mother teaches at Raupo School, but you hardly ever see them. He’s an independent young larrikin.

$8.00 Pongo - Janice ‘Pongo’ Footrot is Wal’s niece who turns up on school holidays. Her Uncle Wal’ loves her to bits, which means she gets away with a fair bit. The Dog is often the victim of her pranks and knows all too well that you cannot win against the likes of Pongo.

This stamp issue celebrates Murray Ball's iconic Footrot Flats comic strip. Click here for more information.
