Partnership with The Reserve Bank of New Zealand
From 2002 – 2026, NZ Post was the official issuer of New Zealand legal tender collectable coins in partnership with the Reserve Bank of New Zealand (RBNZ).
New Zealand does not have a national mint that supplies our coin currency. Therefore, the Reserve Bank of New Zealand outsources the production of this currency to international mints. NZ Post was authorised to be the official distributor of collectable coin series approved by RBNZ.
NZ Post was also given the authority to distribute collectable banknote sets produced occasionally by RBNZ.
After a strategic review, RBNZ made the decision to withdraw from producing collectable coins and NZ Post’s contract ended on 30 June 2026. NZ Post will continue to produce the final coins in the programme and sell the coins remaining in stock.
