Design
This set of coins focuses on the battle between Kupe and the mighty octopus, Te Wheke-o-Muturangi. The first shows a close-up of Kupe entangled in the octopus, with details of the tattoos that adorned great Polynesian navigators. Kupe is fighting it with his adze, Ranga-tū-whēnua. The second shows the great octopus under the waka, with the Matariki constellation above.
