In New Zealand and Australia, Armistice Day has always been overshadowed by Anzac Day (25 April), which was first observed in 1916 and has been a full public holiday in New Zealand since 1921. Armistice Day was nevertheless observed in New Zealand. Until the 1950s, trains would come to a halt and vehicles would pull over to the kerb just before 11am on 11 November. Drivers and passengers observed two minutes’ silence.
New Zealand Post is proud to have worked with the Reserve Bank of New Zealand to issue New Zealand’s second ever coloured commemorative circulating coin. This year’s 50c Armistice circulating coin follows the Spirit of Anzac 50c circulating coin, issued in 2015. As well as this exciting new circulating coin, a collectable silver proof version of the coin is available, as well as a second silver proof coin featuring three poppies representing allies Australia, New Zealand and the UK. A set of three coins will also be released in a collaboration between New Zealand Post, the Royal Australian Mint and the Royal Mint of the United Kingdom.
