To meet increased demand for a 7d stamp a blank 'stamp duty' printing plate was used to produce a 7d provisional issue in a carmine colour overprinted with '7d Postage' in black.
Issue information
The stamp was replaced by the 7d Churchill stamp issued on 24 May 1965 followed by a new 7d value in the 1960 Pictorial series issued on 16 March 1966. New Zealand's 'stamp duty' or 'arms' type stamp design was originally produced in 1929 by H L Richardson of Wellington. The design incorporated the New Zealand Coat of Arms, however because of the confined space the coat of arms depicted in the stamp design varied considerably from the version authorised by Royal Warrant in 1911.
An error was also made in the design whereby the New Zealand flag was depicted instead of the Union Jack.
