New Zealand Post released two new definitive stamps on 2 October 2000 to facilitate a rate change for Standard Post (90c) and Fast Post ($1.30) extra large letters within New Zealand.
The new 90c stamp design featured the gentle, symmetrical shape of Rangitoto Island, one of the most distinctive landmarks of the Hauraki Gulf, replacing the equally iconic Waitomo Caves 90c stamp issued in 1996. This superb volcanic landscape is home to the largest pohutukawa forest in the world.
The $1.30 stamp design featured Lake camp in South Canterbury. This small lake is situated on the plateau between the headwaters of the Ragitata and South Branch Ashburton Rivers.
A first day cover with the two new stamp designs and an image of Doughboy Bay and Mason Bay, Stewart Island was also available for a limited time.
