Issue information
The New Zealand Collection 2011 consisted of 79 pages of brilliant imagery, collectable stamps and extensive commentary from well known New Zealanders such as Hilary Barry, Gary McCormick, Raybon Kan, Phil Gifford and Hon Dr Pita Sharples.
This year’s New Zealand Collection contained an exclusive Victoria Cross: The New Zealand Story imperforate stamp sheet. This historic issue honoured the 22 men who received the Victoria Cross while serving in New Zealand’s armed forces, and this unique product was a must to complete any New Zealand stamp collection.
Our Story Through Stamps
There’s no doubt that 2011 was a year of significant events, of which one took place in our own backyard. Rugby World Cup 2011 captivated the country and New Zealand Post issued New Zealand’s first 3D stamp to celebrate. In The Final Countdown chapter of The New Zealand Collection 2011, sports journalist Phil Gifford gave a unique insight into New Zealand’s passion for Rugby, with the Webb Ellis Cup 3D stamp sitting proudly alongside.
Read on further and you could discover the 2011 Children’s Health issue, which paid tribute to three of New Zealand’s native, endangered flightless birds – the kiwi, the kākāpō and the takahē. The chapter honoured Don Merton – a New Zealand hero who dedicated his life to bird conservation and was directly involved in saving our precious kākāpō.
Turn towards the end of the album and you could find a chapter dedicated to hei matau – the feature of the 2011 Matariki stamps. Traditionally used as fish hooks, today hei matau are worn around the neck. You could discover more about this cultural treasure through the writing of Garry Nicholas, General Manager, Toi Māori Aotearoa (Māori Arts New Zealand).
